Troop 42 Policy Guidelines and Behavior Expectations for Trips and Hikes

No-one likes too many rules so we try to keep them to a minimum, but the guidelines below are important to ensure that we all have the best possible experience on our trips while staying safe and respectful.

·    Fire, Matches, Lighters, etc. – to be handled only by Scouts who have earned their Firem’n chit, and only in the presence of an adult.  Never have these items in tents.  Never have a open flame in or around tents.

·    Respectfulness – Scouts are relied upon to be respectful to other people and to their environment.

o        Listen to and respond appropriately to adults

o        Be kind and helpful to each other

o        Be polite to other people that you encounter

o        Do not use inappropriate language

o        If you see someone being picked-on or made to feel uncomfortable, don’t ignore it - seek help.

o        Follow the Outdoor Code

·    Electronics – leave personal entertainment electronics, e.g. MP3 players, CD players, game consoles, etc., at home.  They discourage conversation, observation and interaction.

·    Buddy System – always use the buddy system, never be alone when away from the Troop.  Never leave your group without first getting permission from a responsible adult leader.

·    Understand State Park and Campsite Rules – always be aware of and observe park rules, especially quiet time.  Often we get to stay in the State Park campsites in return for service projects and we do not want to lose this privilege.

·    Cooking and KP – as a general rule, cooking and KP is the responsibility of the Scouts on a trip.  If a duty roster has not been established, all Scouts pitch-in.  Campsite kitchen will be clean and food stowed immediately after meals.

·    Knives and axes – to be handled only by Scouts who have earned their Totin’ Chip, and only in the presence of an adult.

·    Safety Equipment – always use appropriate safety equipment.  For example, you must wear a helmet when biking, skateboarding, skiing, etc.,
